St Angelo Fort Kannur

St. Angelo Fort or Kannur Fort is a historic European-built temple located on the shores of the Arabian Sea, near the city of Kannur. This temple was built in 1505 by the Portuguese Viceroy Dom Francisco Almeida. At that time, Kannur Fort was a very important center for trade and defense. Later, the Dutch and the British became the heirs of this fort.

The view of the Arabian Sea from the top of the fort is very beautiful. This view becomes even more beautiful during sunset. Inside the fort, an ancient lighthouse and the remains of buildings from the Portuguese and later British eras can be seen. The walls of this triangular-shaped fort are built like a hill.

The construction style of the fort is a good example of European military architecture. Its features include large gates, observation towers, and bastions for installing cannons. The fort walls offer a panoramic view of Kannur city and the Mappila Bay port. This port was once an important center of trade.

The fort is now under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India. The garden here is beautifully maintained. Considering its historical importance, many history students and researchers visit it. Old cannons and other military equipment can be seen inside the fort. .

Apart from being a historical place, Kannur Fort is also a great tourist destination today. Many people come here to visit with their families in the evenings, to enjoy the sea breeze, and to enjoy the natural beauty.
