Airports in Kerala

Kerala is one of the states with the highest number of international airports in India. This network of airports, stretching from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur, helps Kerala maintain strong connectivity with foreign countries, especially the Gulf countries.

  1. Trivandrum International Airport (TRV)
Thiruvananthapuram Airport is the oldest airport in Kerala. Established in 1932 as part of the Kerala Flying Club, it became the first airport in Kerala to be granted international status on 1 January 1991. Located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, it primarily serves passengers from southern Kerala. It is now managed by the Adani Group from the Airports Authority of India.
  2. Cochin International Airport (COK)
Cochin International Airport (CIAL) is the first airport in India to be established under a public-private partnership (PPP). Located at Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district, it began operations on 25 May 1999. It has the distinction of being the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. It is currently the largest and busiest airport in Kerala.
  3. Calicut International Airport (CCJ)
Located in Karipur in Malappuram district, this airport was opened on 13 April 1988. It is the main aviation hub of the Malabar region. Although it initially operated only domestic services, it was granted international status in February 2006. The runway is currently being developed to accommodate larger aircraft.
  4. Kannur International Airport (CNN)
This is the fourth international airport established to cater to the development of the northern region of Kerala. Located in Mattanur in Kannur district, this airport was inaugurated on 9 December 2018. Built under a public-private partnership (KIAL), this airport is notable for the size of its runway and caters to the travel needs of North Malabar and Wayanad.
