Best Beaches in Kerala

Kerala has a coastline of over 580 km. The beaches here, which are rich in beautiful coconut trees, cliffs and sandy beaches, play an important role in attracting tourists. Each beach has its own historical and geographical features.

  • Kovalam Beach
    Kovalam Beach, located in Thiruvananthapuram district, is one of the most famous beaches internationally. Kovalam is made up of three crescent-shaped beaches here: Lighthouse Beach, Hava Beach and Samudra Beach. It is safe for swimming due to its rocky shore and shallow water. Ayurvedic centers, resorts and lighthouse are the main attractions here.
  • Varkala Beach
    Located in Thiruvananthapuram district, Varkala Beach is notable for its unique geographical feature. It is the only beach in Kerala where the cliffs rise parallel to the sea. The sunset views from the top of these rocks are breathtaking. It is believed that there are mineral-rich Ottamooli springs here. The ‘Janardhanaswamy Temple’ in Varkala is also a major pilgrimage center.
  • Alappuzha Beach
    Located in Alappuzha district, this beach evokes the heritage of this area where the backwaters and the sea meet. The 150-year-old sea bridge and lighthouse are the main attractions here. This sea bridge was once used to moor ships at the Alappuzha port. This beach also has a background in the historical coir industry of Alappuzha.
  • Kozhikode Beach
    This is one of the main beaches in the Malabar region. Kappad Beach, where Vasco da Gama historically set foot, is nearby. Kozhikode Beach is mainly an evening entertainment center for city dwellers. The ruins of the ancient sea bridge, the Lions Park and the unique Kozhikode delicacies are famous here.
  • Bekal Beach
    Located in Kasaragod district, Bekal Beach is mainly notable for the presence of its historic Bekal Fort. The beautiful view of the fort walls jutting into the sea attracts tourists from all over the world. This beach is relatively calm and clean.
  • Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach
    Located in Kannur district, Muzhappilangad Beach is the largest in Asia and the only drive-in beach in India. You can drive along the safe shoreline with no waves for about four kilometers. A favorite for adventure lovers, this beach is gaining great importance in local tourism.
