Rivers of Kerala

Kerala has 44 rivers that originate in the Western Ghats and flow into the Arabian Sea or backwaters. Of these, 41 flow westward, while three rivers, Kabani, Bhavani and Pambar, flow eastward. Rivers in Kerala are considered to be more than 15 km long. These rivers play an important role in the culture and economy of Kerala.

1 . Periyar

This is the longest river in Kerala (244 km). Originating in the Sivagiri hills of Tamil Nadu, Periyar flows through the districts of Idukki and Ernakulam. Known as the ‘lifeline of Kerala’, this river is home to the largest number of hydroelectric projects and dams, including Idukki. Holy places like Aluva and Kalady are on its banks.

  1. Bharathapuzha

Bharathappuzha, also known as Nila and Ponnani Puzha, is the second longest river in Kerala (209 km). This river, which flows through Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts, is known as the lifeblood of Kerala’s cultural map. It plays a crucial role in the growth of art and culture.

  1. Pamba River

Pamba (176 km) is the third largest river in Kerala. This river originates from Pulachimala and flows into the Vembanad Lake. It is also known as ‘Dakshina Bhagirathi’ due to the presence of the Sabarimala temple. It is the main water source for the Kuttanad areas.

  1. Chaliyar

Chaliyar (169 km) is the fourth longest river in Kerala. It flows through Wayanad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts and joins the Arabian Sea at Beypore. This river is where gold deposits were discovered and played an important role in the transportation of teak logs in Nilambur in the past.

  1. Chalakudy Puzha

This is the fifth longest river in Kerala (145.5 km). It is considered one of the rivers with the highest biodiversity. This river, which flows through wildlife sanctuaries like Parambikulam and Sholayar, is a tributary of Periyar.

  1. Kadalundipuzha

This river flows through Malappuram and Kozhikode districts (130 km). This river, which is the main water source of the Valluvanadan areas, falls into the Arabian Sea near the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary.

  1. Achankovil River

Achankovil, one of the main tributaries of the Pampa, is 128 km long. This river flows through Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts and falls into the Kayamkulam Lake. This river is important for the rituals associated with the Shasta temples.

  1. Kallada River

The lifeblood of Kollam district, Kallada River is 121 km long. This river originates from the Western Ghats and joins the Ashtamudi Lake. The Kallada Irrigation Project, the largest irrigation project in Kerala, is located on this river.

  1. Muvattupuzha River

This river is formed by the confluence of three rivers, Thodupuzha, Kali and Kothayar, and is 121 km long. It flows through Ernakulam and Kottayam districts and falls into the Vembanad Lake. It is one of the rivers in Kerala that flows through the most districts.

  1. Valapattanam River

The Valapattanam River (110 km) is the largest river in Kannur district. This river originates from the Brahmagiri Hills and flows through the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary. It joins the Arabian Sea at Valapattanam in Kannur.

  1. Chandragiri River

The Chandragiri River (105 km) is the longest river in Kasaragod district. It joins the Arabian Sea near Kasaragod town. The ancient Chandragiri Fort is located on the banks of this river.

  1. Manimala River

The Manimala River, which flows through Kottayam and Alappuzha districts, is 92 km long. This river is of great importance to the agricultural sector of Kuttanad. It is one of the important waterways for the Aranmula boat race.

  1. Kabani River

The Kabani (57 km) is the longest of the three east-flowing rivers. Originating in Wayanad district and flowing into Karnataka before joining the Cauvery River, this river is the main water source of eastern Kerala.

  1. Bhavani Puzha

The second major east-flowing river is Bhavani (38 km). Flowing through the forest areas of Attappadi and Silent Valley, this river provides water to the agriculture in the eastern parts of Palakkad district.

  1. Kuttiyadi Puzha

Flowing through Kozhikode district, this river is 74 km long. It is also known as the ‘Yellow River of Kerala’.

The 15 major rivers of Kerala are: Periyar, Bharathapuzha (Nila), Pambanadi, Chaliyar, Chalakudy, Kadalundipuzha, Achankovilar, Kalladayar, Muvattupuzha, Valapattanam, Chandragiripuzha, Manimalayar, Kabani, Bhavanipuzha, Kuttiadi. Together, these rivers support the biodiversity and economic base of Kerala.
