Backwaters are an integral part of Kerala’s landscape. This vast network of saltwater and freshwater bodies, parallel to the Arabian Sea and connected to the estuaries of coastal rivers, plays a vital role in Kerala’s economy and tourism.
- Vembanad Lake
Vembanad Lake is the largest lake in Kerala and the longest in the country. It is spread over the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam. There are many small and big islands in this lake. Backwaters like Kochi Lake and Veli Lake are part of Vembanad. Punnamada Lake, where the famous Nehru Trophy boat race is held, is part of Vembanad. The major rivers of Kerala, Periyar, Pampa, Manimalayar and Meenachil, all flow into this lake.
- Ashtamudi Lake
Located in Kollam district, Ashtamudi Lake is the second largest lake in Kerala. As the name suggests, this lake with eight tributaries is one of the deepest in India. The Kallada River flows into this lake. The National Waterway passes through it. The beautiful coconut groves and lake views on the banks of the lake are a major attraction for tourism here.
- Sasthamkotta Lake
Located in Kollam district, Sasthamkotta Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Kerala. The Sasthamkotta temple is located on its banks. This lake is the main source of drinking water for Kollam district and nearby areas. The water of this lake is exceptionally clean, which is why it is famous all over the world.
- Valiyaparamba Backwaters
Located in Kasaragod district, Valiyaparamba Backwaters is the largest backwater network in the northern region of Kerala. Four rivers, including the Tejaswini River, meet here. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Alappuzha, these backwaters offer a more tranquil and rural experience to visitors. The area is now famous for houseboat trips.
- Kuttanad Backwaters
Spread across Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, Kuttanad is one of the few agricultural regions in the world that is located below sea level. Famous for its paddy cultivation, this region is a waterway network of backwaters, rivers and streams. Known as the rice paddy of Kerala, Kuttanad Backwaters is famous all over the world for its beauty.
