Paithalmala is a beautiful mountain located in the Western Ghats in Kannur district, close to the Karnataka border. Situated at an altitude of about 4,500 feet (1,450 meters) above sea level, this area is the highest in Kannur district. It is a favorite among adventure trekkers. Dense forests, meadows, fog, and cool weather are the main attractions here.
Trekking is the main attraction of Paithalmala. There are several ways to climb the mountain on foot. The views of meadows and mountain ranges that you get when you reach the top are attractive to tourists. Green valleys, distant mountains, and the Arabian Sea can be seen from here. The views of Paithalmala, which is covered in fog, are of special beauty.
Permission from the Forest Department is required for trips through the forest. A variety of flora and birds can be seen here. This provides an opportunity for nature photographers to capture the best scenes. For adventure lovers, there are facilities here for camping and spending time close to nature.
Paithalmala has another beauty during the monsoon. Small streams and waterfalls become active and the area becomes more green. However, trekking can be a bit difficult during the monsoon. Therefore, it is more advisable to visit during the low rainfall and cool season.
Paithalmala is located near Pottenplav, a hilly area of Kannur. After Paithalmala became a major trekking center under government control, many people come here daily. In addition, some resorts and homestays are available here for tourists to stay.
