Andallur Kavu

Andallurkavu is a very ancient and very famous kavu in North Kerala. This temple is located near Dharmadam.

The legend about the origin of Andallurkavu is as follows. During the wedding of Sita, the bow that was worshipped and maintained by the sage Janaka was broken by Lord Rama. The fire rays that were released by the force of the bow breaking spread in all directions.

Parashurama got angry when he realized that Lord Rama had broken the divine bow. But Narada Maharishi calmed Parashurama’s anger by saying that it was for a good cause. Later, Narada advised Parashurama that it was good to build a temple at the place where the fire was seen when the bow was broken. It is believed that the Dharmadam temple is the temple built under the leadership of Parashurama near Dharmadam, where divine light was visible.

The Andallur Kavu is made up of two parts, the lower Kavu and the upper Kavu. Three idols named Deivathar, Angakaran and Bapuran are installed in the Kavu.

The main festival of Andallur Kavu is the Kaliyattam, which is held every year in the Malayalam month of Kumbha. In Andallur Kavu, where many Theyyams are performed, Theyyams related to the story of Sri Rama are also performed.
