The ceremony to start the Kalari study is called Kalari Vidyarambha or Kalari Irangal. Although Kalari practice can be started at any age, it is generally believed that it is best to start learning Kalari at the age of seven. Since the body is more flexible and the mind will quickly learn what the Guru is teaching without preconceived notions, and the benefits of Kalari can be felt for a long time in life, it is best to start Kalari Vidya at an early age. The older you get, the harder it is to learn calories.
Every year there is Kalari commencement Day as the school opens. This day is known as Kalari Thurakkal. Apart from this, there are those who start studying Kalari on the day of Vijaya Dashami, when students celebrate Hari Sri (Education begining ceremony). But there is no necessary to start Kalari studies on the above mentioned days. Kalari can be started on any day for the convenience of students and teacher. It is considered that hot season is not desirable for Kalari study but rainy season is most suitable for Kalari study.
Students who come to Kalari for the first time are given Guru Dakshina and receive the Guru’s blessings by touching the Guru’s feet. After receiving Guru’s blessing the disciple should bow down at Poothara, Ganapatithara and Guruthara with the help of Guru. Special Pujas will be held at Kalari on the days of admission of students. Also the entire kalari is decorated with flowers and the floor is sprinkled with rice and flowers and sanctified.
Guru and Shishyas sees Kalari as a sanctuary like a temple. Kalari study starts only after praying at the divine positions like Poothara, Ganapatithara and Guruthara every day.
