Introduction to Kalari

Kalari or Kalaripayattu is one of the most ancient martial art existing in the world. Centuries ago, this great martial art was originated in south India, mainly the area belongs to present Kerala state. There are no industrial records about the period in which Kalari originated, but on the basis of available evidence, Kalari originated in the 15th century or 15th century. Along with physical and mental personality development, the ultimate goal of Kalaripayattu is to create a virtuous society that takes care of Dharma and Truth. A martial art used for selfish interest.

Like many other ancient wonders of India, Kalaripayattu is related to Hindu religion. Practicing kalaripayat is through the Guru-Shishya system which was established in ancient India. Apart from Martial arts, treatment methods including Marma treatment are also included in the study of Kalaripayattu. Methods for healing the injuries and wounds caused by Kalari practice are mainly involved in this treatment.

Although an ancient martial art, unlike other Indian ancient arts, there is no caste discrimination in Kalaripayattu. Those who belong to any caste or religion or gender practice Kalaripayattu.

The places where Kalari payat are practiced are called Kalari. Guru’s and Shishyas treat Kalari like a temple. Apart from the weapons needed for study, there will also be a part for prayer in a manner reminiscent of a temple. Studying in Kalari only start after praying to the Gods.

There are mainly three types of Kalari like Northern Kalari, Southern Kalari, Thulunadan Kalari. On the basis of regions, on the basis of origin, these varieties are different.

Apart from being a martial art, it is possible to make the body and mind more flexible, to increase self-confidence, patience and courage through practice.

Kalari has four stages namely Body practice, Stick practice, Weapon practice and bare hand practice. In Kalari, these steps are called Meythari, Kolthari, Ankathari and Verumkai. In addition to the above stages, the last stage of Kalari study also includes some therapeutic methods including Marma Vidyas and Uzhichil.
