Panchuruli is an extremely fierce deity derived from the concepts of Mother God. Even though there are few places where Panchuruli Theiyam is made in Malanad, Panchuruli has the first place among theya lovers. Panchuruli Theyam stands out for its characteristic weaving and very elegant embellishments.
At the time when Shumbha Nishumbhan, the evil asuras who had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that only women could kill them, were the destroyers of the three worlds, Kali actually arose from Goddess Parvati to kill them. To help that Kali, the seven goddesses arose from the Homa Kund of Maheswara. Maheshwari, Aumari, Brahmini, Vaishnavi, Indrani, Varahi and Chamundi, the fifth mother in the form of Varaha is performed to Panchuruli as Theyam. Panchuruli is the main deity of Tulu land, Panchi means pig in Tulu language. It is believed that the name Panchuruli is derived from Kali, which is in the form of a pig. But there is another opinion that the name Panchuruli comes from the meaning of the goddess who killed Panchaveeras.
Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara was displeased with the actions of the Panchabanasuras. There is also a story that the Bhrama Vishnu Maheswara created a goddess from their radiance to kill the Pancha Banasuras, and that goddess is Panchuruli. Panchuruli, who killed the Panchabanasuras, then live on earth. Panchuruli is the main deity of Tulu land. Near Vadakara there was a Kalari practitioner named Ponnaratthachan. To improve his martial arts skills, he went to Tulu Nadu to study the Tulu Nadan Kalari steps and there he became a complete Panchuruli devotee. It is said that because of the prayers of Ponnaratthachan, Panchuruli came to the Malanad with him. Panchuruli came to Malanad and came to Thirunada of Madai Kavilamma, then Rakta Chamundi and Vishnu Murthy became Panchuruli’s friends. The three of them crossed the Ezhom river and reached a place called Pattuvam, where they came to Pattuvam, the goddess of the land, Koolur Bhagavathy, the goddess of the land of Pattuvam. Koolur Bhagavathy told Panchuruli that a Gandharva named Maya Malaramban was interrupting his daily activities and if he killed that Gandharva then he would be given the kingdom of Pattuva.
Maya Malaramba who resides in a Banyan Tree was killed by Panchuruli in the form of a bird and then Panchuruli sat on the same Banyan Tree. Kullur Bhagwati gave Panchuruli the governorship. Vadakku Bhagat Panchuruli and his friends were given a position in the Valiya Mathilakam temple as Mover. Pattuvam is considered as main place of Panjurli.
Commemorating the story of the killing of Maya Malaramba, there is a ritual of meeting the Goddess from the top of the Banyan Tree while the Panchuruli Theyam is performed in the Vadakkee Kavu, and placing her on the devine room, as well as the ceremony of climbing the Banyan Tree when Panchuruli Theyam devine hair makeup is removed. Panchuruli Theyam is performed by the people belonging to the Malayar community.
