Chuliyar Bhagavathy is one of the most important Theyam in Kerala. Belonging to war deities, this goddess is also known as Chuliar Bhagavathy and Shuliar Bhagavathy.
Chuliyar Bhagavathy is actually a goddess created by Lord Shiva from his third eyes to kill Karthavirasura who came down to burn the granary of Trikkannadappan. The goddess who was born with Shulavumenthi in her hand is known as Shuliar Bhagwati or Chuliyar Bhagwati.
When the goddess left Mukambika with her devotee and reached Uduma, she was attracted by the beauty of the area and decided to settle there. Later Devi went to Trikannad Temple and as requested by Devi, Paramashivan gave her place in Trikannad Temple. It is believed that Chuliyar Bhagwati protects and cares for ninety-six villages from Pattuvam to Patambur. Chuliyar Bhagavathy is the sixth Paradevatha among the six Paradevathas. It is believed that Chuliar Bhagwati, who is Adiparashakti herself, removes the sorrows of the devotees and removes pain and disease.
Chuliyar Bhagavathy’s Theyam descends with round hair, a coconut tree leaves garment and flaming torches on the front of her waist.
