Paththamudayam

Pathamudayam(Sunrise on the 10th day of Malayalam month Thulam ) is a very important day as far as northern Kerala is concerned. In the agricultural culture of North Kerala, in pathamudayam the second crop is brought down after the first harvest .This day is also known as Thulapath

Theyatam begins on the 10th day of Thulam after four months of silence in the Kavus. The festival season in North Kerala begins with the departure of Vishakandan Theyyam in Kolacheri Chathothu Kavu on the 10th of Thula month. Patthamudayam is also called Pattavata in the local language. Most of the Theyyas, the goddesses of fertility, are worshiped in the month of Thulam. Kurathi Theyyam, Wayal Kurathi Theyyam and Kunhar Kurathi Theyyam are performed in the old homes during the month of Thulam. It is in the month of Thulam that Kalichan Theyyam descends to see villages.

It is generally believed that Theyyam season begins on the 10th day of Thula month, but in a few places, some of the theya festivals start on the first day of Thula month itself.
